Official 98SE Updates - manual installation order after 2004 Security Updates CD from Microsoft
This page displays the ORDER OF UPDATES *AFTER* using the 2004 Security Updates CD as installed via windowsupdate.microsoft.com [the server defined order of installation].
The order was taken from iuhist.xml and placed in proper chronological/intallation order [reversed - last to first].
If you have saved the files directly from the catalog [from the Upates server - Preferences - Show Catalog], it will create the WUTemp folder, therefore you can use the below in batch form [hence, why you see a REM in front of the top lines], just wait [add a pause between the individual installers so you can close and say not to reboot after the installer finishes] to restart until all have been installed. Change the drive letter to the proper drive/directory.
You can also search Microsoft Knowledge Base and Downloads for the KB/file number should you wish to use that method of download or it becomes necessary.
The ADDITIONAL UPDATES at the bottom of the page, show files you may need to download from Microsoft Downloads site directly or from another source, for shutdown, networking, and other issues.
I suggest you save all of the downloaded files to CDROM or other, for later manual installation of 98SE updates. A warning: there are other updates that were never offered to ALL users [call support] or which were previously offered on windowsupdate which can now only be obtained from Microsoft Downloads, or, at times, only found by searching the Internet for the specific need.
Alternative download sites are:
1. Contact Gary Terhune at http://www.grystmill.com/ who is offering both a copy of the 2004 Security Udates CDROM and the updates produced after that CD until support end on a separate CDROM. You also will need to update the time zones/daylight savings adjustments, Gary also offers a fix for that issue.
2. Try the MSFN forums, specifically:
Monster list of hotfixes noting that files offered after June of 2006 were not officially released for Windows 98SE.
These and other files can be found on:
MDGx Updates, fixes, other files and tweaks and on one of the postings on MSFN:
MSFN 98FE+98 SE+ME updates+patches+(hot)fixes
Be cautious installing the un-official updates if you go that route, as they may cause issues with some of your installed applications or applications you intend to use, and some may cause severe OS instability. Additionally, the IE 6 un-official files may give you a false sense of security as they were produced from updates for 2K or XP and may actually require the additional services/functions found in those OSs to fully function properly.
